PHFL Highflow Cartridges Enhance Industrial Water Filtration Efficiency
Pullner Filtration has introduced the PHFL series of high-flow filter cartridges for industrial reverse-osmosis pretreatment and large-volume fluid filtration. The design uses a single large-format cartridge in place of multiple standard elements, a configuration intended to reduce housing requirements, footprint and maintenance work. The series is offered in 20-, 40- and 60-inch lengths and is aimed at continuous-flow water and process applications.
Core design advantages
The central change is scale. A single 60-inch PHFL cartridge can replace as many as 40 standard 10-inch cartridges, according to the product specifications. That configuration is intended to reduce the number of filter housings and cut space use and maintenance labor by about 80 percent.
The cartridges use pleated media, which provides more filtration surface area than wound cartridge designs. The larger surface area is intended to extend service life and lower operating differential pressure.
Specifications at a glance
The PHFL line covers multiple lengths, a 6-inch core diameter and filtration ratings from 0.1 to 70 micrometers at absolute precision. Media options include polypropylene, glass fiber, PES and PTFE.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Length options | 20 in, 40 in, 60 in |
| Core diameter | 6 in |
| Filtration rating | 0.1–70 micrometers (absolute) |
| Maximum flow rate | Up to 100 cubic meters per hour (single 60-inch cartridge) |
| Available media | Polypropylene (PP), glass fiber, PES, PTFE |
Applications and housing compatibility
The series is designed for high-capacity, continuous-flow duties, including industrial RO pre-filtration, seawater desalination, municipal water treatment, condensate polishing and chemical process filtration.
It is also designed to fit mainstream high-flow filter housings from Parker, Pall and Pentair. That compatibility is intended to give existing systems a direct upgrade path without replacing the housing.
Pleated versus depth filtration
Choosing between pleated and depth cartridges depends on the contaminant load and the required particle retention. Pleated PHFL cartridges rely on surface filtration and are intended for high-flow service with absolute-rated particle capture, making them suitable for RO pretreatment.
Depth cartridges capture particles throughout the filter medium rather than only at the surface. They can be advantageous when feedwater carries a high or variable solids load and may be used upstream of pleated elements to prevent rapid loading.
For complex operating conditions, a combined depth-plus-pleated filtration arrangement can balance coarse solids removal with final particle control and help protect downstream membrane equipment.
